Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 11:46AM In just his second year on the mat, 10 year old Hunter Fleming has won the 2011 CT Freestlye State Championships held in Madison Connecticut on June 18th. Coach Fernandes said "Hunter drew a tough weight class with two highly touted wrestlers in the field. I knew it would be an uphill battle all day, but I also know that when hunters on, he can beat just about anyone."
Fleming did just that. In his first match Tyler Madirira of Northeast Elite took a highly competitive first period 4-3 with a last second takedown. (a wrestler must when 2 of three periods in Freestyle in order to win the match) Hunter came back to win the next two periods 4-0 and 7-4 respectively. "He came back hard in the second and the third periods and really defended his opponents takedowns as well has hitting two of the nicest double leg takedowns that we saw all day" said coach Fernandes. Fleming then destroyed his semi final opponent, Sean Portly of Madison, pinning him in the first period.
In the Final, Hunter found himself down again after losing the first period to Team Tugmans, Kyle Davern. "In between periods, I simply asked him why he was there" says coach. He looked at me and said " to be a State Champion." and walked back out on to the mat. Fleming wasn't kidding as he walked back out, he teched Davern in the 2nd period 6-0 (A technical fall happens when a wrestler is winning any period by 6 points) and teched him again in the third period 7-0 to win his first CT Freestyle State Championship. "He simply dominated the rest of the match" said Coach Fernandes, "We are very proud of him and all of our wrestlers who placed today."
In all FishEye had four wrestlers compete in the State Championships, all of them placing in the top 3. Also medaling were hunters brothers, Cooper Fleming - 2nd place, Logan Fleming - 3rd place and Devin Larson - 3rd place. "Its a good day at the state tournament when all of your competitors do well. Our wrestlers work extremely hard, it's paying off."
